House of Quality is used for defining the relationship between customer desires and the firm/product capabilities. It is a part of the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and it looks like a house with a "correlation matrix" as its roof, customer wants versus product features as the main part, competitor evaluation as the porch etc.
Foundation of House of Quality
The foundation of the house of quality is the belief that products should be designed to reflect customers’ desires and tastes so that marketing people, design engineers, and manufacturing staff must work closely together from the time a product is first conceived. The house of quality is a kind of conceptual map that provides the means for interfunctional planning and communications. People with different problems and responsibilities can thrash out design priorities while referring to patterns of evidence on the house’s grid.
Basic Structure of House of Quality
Example of House of Quality in Industry
This is one of the example of vacuum cleaner using House of Quality. It shows the House of Quality for the current product illustrating the current customer and technical requirements and their importance weighting. Starting from this point the influencing spheres for the vacuum cleaner within the global environment are determined. They can be differentiated in specific and general spheres. The specific spheres of influence according to the vacuum cleaner are for example the hygienic behaviour and the living situation. Economy and environment are examples of general spheres of influence.
